On April 4, another ZOOM meeting of students of the course "Intercultural Communication" with students of Florida State University (FSU, USA) took place, as part of the Ukraine Task Force support project for Ukraine. The initiators of the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Maryna Shkuropat and Assoc. Prof. Svitlana Yarozhynsky, proposed for discussion the topic "(Mis)representation of cultures in media". The applicants discussed stereotypes and prejudices regarding other cultures that are formed by the media, the methods used by propaganda to create a negative image of some peoples (in particular, Putin's propaganda against Ukrainians), and the need to obtain reliable information. In general, it was a good opportunity to practice the skills of ethical intercultural communication, which in theory, applicants learn in pairs: respectful attitude towards the interlocutor, accurate presentation of facts, providing the opportunity to express an opinion and listen carefully to it, focusing on commonalities rather than differences. The American participants of the meeting emphasized that the conversation with the Ukrainian students made them think about an issue they had never thought about at all – the perception of Americans by other peoples through the media and products of mass culture. The participants of the meeting agreed to collect examples of biased representation of cultures in the media and to meet again to discuss them during the semester.
