Translators' ABC

On April 16, 2026, the Department of English Philology and Translation held an English-language cognitive event Translators' ABC, dedicated to many aspects of practical knowledge and skills of philologists-translators during higher education at the Horlivka Institute of Foreign Languages of the Donbass State Pedagogical University (Dnipro).

Participants had the opportunity to test themselves in various tasks on numerous topics, such as translators and translations, pragmatics, translation techniques, polysemy and context, semantic integration, domestication and alienation, translation with a distinction between British and American English (vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, style), translation of idioms, pseudo-internationalisms ("false friends of the translator"), correct and incorrect translation, overcoming grammatical interference, interlingual punctuation differences, distinguishing the areas and principles of application of written and oral translation, translation cursive, CAT tools (automated translation tools), translation of names of international organizations based on abbreviations, military translation terminology, translation of words to denote sounds (onomatopoeia), linguopragmatics, and official translation of film titles.

Concise educational videos, tests on all the above topics, as well as exciting video reviews from applicants about translation practice and graduates about the possibilities of the translation profession created a warm and active atmosphere. The event was hosted by Olena Yasinetska, Associate Professor of the Department of English Philology and Translation, and higher education applicants Vira Peftits and Yulia Bolbit.

We thank our defenders – the Armed Forces of Ukraine – who make such meetings possible. We are grateful to our participants – colleagues and current and future students – for their attention, activity and interest. We wish everyone peace, inspiration, success and all the best!
