In 1918, Ukrainian soldiers, mostly volunteer students, became a symbol of heroism and self-sacrifice during the battle with the Bolsheviks, seemingly defending a small railway station on the approaches to Kyiv, but in fact - the independence of the state and the right of our people to live freely. In honor of this feat, January 29 has been declared the Day of Remembrance of Heroes of Krut in Ukraine.

The existence of an independent Ukrainian state is the reason for Russian military aggression not only now, but also during the stormy events of 1917-1921. As of the end of January 1918, the Bolsheviks occupied almost the entire Left Bank and were ready to deliver the main blow to Kyiv. The enemy prevailed in the number of manpower and weapons, the army of the newly created Ukrainian People's Republic did not have the necessary means to protect the capital from all possible directions of attack. The defense of the Kruty railway station was taken up by a detachment of volunteers, their heroic actions and successful selection of positions made it possible to slow down the Red Army's advance and buy time for the signing of the Brest Peace Treaty, under the terms of which the countries of the Quadruple Alliance recognized the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

It is symbolic that in March 2022, the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Territorial Defense Forces joined the battle near Kruty with the Russian invaders. After 104 years, Ukrainian fighters once again restrained the Russians in this place, on the approaches to the capital, giving diplomats time and opportunity to negotiate critical assistance from other countries. Heroy Krut is an example of courage and sacrifice for all generations of Ukrainians.
