The Verkhovna Rada approved the trident as the Small Coat of Arms 31 years ago, since then every year February 19 is celebrated in Ukraine as the Day of the State Coat of Arms.
The trident has a thousand-year history and is an important symbol for the Ukrainian people: it was used by the rulers of Russia, under the sign of the trident they fought for the Ukrainian People's Republic, it was on the awards and postcards of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, it became a symbol of resistance to the Soviet totalitarian regime. The approval of the trident as the State Coat of Arms after the restoration of Ukraine's independence became a landmark event that emphasized the historical durability of Ukrainian statehood.
Today, the trident is a symbol of independent and sovereign Ukraine, which is fighting for its future: it occupies an honorable place on the chevrons of defenders, thanks to which it gradually returns to its rightful place during the de-occupation of all territories temporarily captured by the enemy.
