Episode 4. How brave we were...

The 1954/1955 academic year was a time of consolidation in a new place, transition to new curricula and programs. That year, the institute had 7 departments with 46 teachers.

The Institute of Foreign Languages was the first higher education institution in the city, the residents of Horliv welcomed teachers and students. A four-story building with a useful area of 2,020 m2 for the educational building was immediately handed over to the university. This building housed 17 classrooms, 5 classrooms, 1 sound laboratory, a library, sports and assembly halls, a lecture hall, a buffet, 4 rooms were occupied for the accommodation of administrative and management personnel, 2 rooms were allocated for bathroom and book storage. At the request of the directorate of the institute, in September 1955, the institute was given 2 dormitories with 100 places in each.

The presence of a fairly large area allowed the institute to work in one shift. The institute had 2 faculties (English and French), which trained specialists with knowledge of one foreign language for 4 years. The institute also had a part-time department, where the training period was 5 years.

In 1956, in connection with the liquidation of the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Foreign Languages, some of its students were transferred to Horlivka, and the number of teachers' rates was increased to 53.

On October 16, 1956, by order of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, a second specialty - Ukrainian language and literature - was introduced at the institute. In the 1956/1957 academic year, 57 teachers worked at the institute and 563 full-time students studied: 336 at the English language faculty and 227 at the French language faculty.

In the second half of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, the institute trained foreign language and Ukrainian language and literature teachers, foreign language teachers, and boarding school educators during 5 years of residential study. Foreign language teachers - graduates of teachers' institutes and pedagogic schools (they were immediately enrolled in the third year) studied at the correspondence department. Absentee students acquired the profession of English or French language teacher.

In her address to the 60th anniversary of the institute, Margarita Petrivna Dvorzhetska mentions those years, who came to Horlivka as part of the first Belotserki "landing party", where she headed the faculty of English, and from 1959 to 1963 worked as vice-rector for educational and scientific work.

"After graduating with honors from the Kyiv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages in 1952, I had the honor and great joy of receiving a referral to work as an English teacher at the Belotserki Teacher's Institute of Foreign Languages. In 1954, this educational institution was merged with the Horli State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. In 1953, at the age of 23, she was appointed to the position of dean of the Faculty of English, where she continued to work. And 6 years later, I was approved for the position of vice-rector for educational and scientific work. I doubted: would I be able to cope, would I be able to handle such a burden of responsibility?

But thanks to the fruitful cooperation of the deans of the faculty, professors and teaching staff of the departments and students, actual strategies for high-quality philological and pedagogical training of foreign language teachers were determined:

  • interrelationship of theoretical and practical foreign language teaching courses with the aim of students mastering the functional aspects of languages as a unique means of content translation in speech communication;
  • creating an atmosphere of pedagogical culture of cooperation between teachers and students in the educational process and independent work;
  • constant study of effective strategies for teaching foreign philological studies in leading higher educational institutions of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Great Britain, USA, France, Germany;
  • at open lectures, practical classes, a thorough demonstration of the use of scientific and methodological achievements of the collective scientific work of teachers and students.

A wide range of current problems of scientific and pedagogical research with an orientation to the professional perspective was formed under the leadership of the rectorate, deans of faculties, heads of departments, taking into account the wishes of students.

With respect and gratitude, we bow to well-known teachers I. A. Pashchenko, O. M. Masyukovich, I. M. Danylenko, V. M. Pinaeva, R. Y. Ryzhkovsky, A. G. Yurzhenko, A. V. Aleksandrov, V. M. Brytenkov, O. T. Sherstyukov, P. V. Terentyev, T. A. Honcharova, I. S. Pavlik, rectors K. K. Shvachka and G. S. Ivanenko, who laid the fundamental foundation of quality humanitarian education in Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (GDPIIM).

Quite objectively, it should be noted that GDPIIM was one of the first higher educational institutions of Ukraine, in which the start of international linguistic and cultural contacts took place.

I remember the meetings of teachers and students with specialists in technical professions from England, India, who in 1959-1962 carried out programs of exchange of experience of professional work at Horli mines and factories.

The administration of the City Council, the city department of education, the management of Horli mines and factories contributed to the organization of interesting meetings with English specialists, their wives, children in secondary schools, at festive concerts, thematic seminars at the institute, as well as on picnic excursions.

International contacts in the atmosphere of live communication enriched the content of English language teaching: they contributed to familiarity with national culture, with the linguistic characteristics of the literary norm of the language and regional dialects, with the social variability of speech in different situations of communication.

International linguistic and cultural events at the Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages received a positive assessment from the republican and all-Union ministries of education, as well as from educational centers of higher education in India and England.

As part of the All-Union delegation of educators in 1961-1963, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with the national experience of pedagogical education in higher educational institutions of Great Britain (London, Manchester, Glasgow, Cambridge), India (New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Madras).

The members of the delegation - Muscovites - were surprised that we were warmly welcomed in London by Englishmen from different regions of England with their families, who became our friends at meetings with the teaching and student staff of the Horli State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, in which, by the way, the Club was founded international friendship.

I would like to especially note that the multifaceted scientific and pedagogical activity at the Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages formed my readiness for experimental phonetic research of English speech communication at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and then for my professional path as dean of the English language faculty, head of the department of phonetics of English language, vice-rector for scientific work at his alma mater - Kyiv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (now Kyiv National Linguistic University (KNLU).

Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages constantly cooperates with KNLU in the field of training of highly qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel, as well as in the modern development of international contacts.

Shvachko S.O. (she also defended her doctoral thesis), Svistun L.V., Shtakina L.O., Byshuk G.V., Pavlov V.M., Gladush N. defended their candidate theses in different years. F., Moiseyenko I.P. and other.

Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages provides qualified personnel to higher education institutions of Ukraine: Professor Gladush N.F. works as vice-rector for scientific work, associate professor I. P. Moiseyenko - dean of the Faculty of English at KNLU. All faculties of Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages are well known in Ukraine and abroad.

The successful work of the rectorate, deans of six faculties, departments ensures a high professional level of training of bachelors, specialists, masters, candidates of sciences in the field of education, humanitarian sciences, and translation activities.

On the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Horliv State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages - my declaration of love for my native institute and wishes for further creative achievements, the realization of a high level of quality in pedagogical education, and the constant development of inter-university international relations."
